Emergency Orthodontic Care

Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but when they do occur, we are here to help. If you experience an issue with your braces or orthodontic appliances, understanding the right steps to take can prevent further discomfort and ensure your treatment stays on track.

Types of Orthodontic Emergencies

1. Issues with Orthodontic Appliances

Braces and other orthodontic appliances may occasionally become loose, bent, or broken. If you experience any of the following, please call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment:

  • Loose bands or brackets – These can usually stay in place until your visit. Call our office so we can determine whether reattachment is necessary.
  • Broken or poking wires – Use a pencil eraser to bend the wire away from your cheek, or trim it carefully with nail clippers. If discomfort persists, schedule an appointment.
  • Irritating tie wires – Cover the wire with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire with a pencil eraser or cotton swab.

Note: To ensure proper care for all patients, we are unable to accommodate walk-in emergencies. Please call ahead so we can assist you promptly.

2. Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

If you sustain an injury to your mouth or teeth—whether or not you are undergoing orthodontic treatment—follow these steps:

  1. Apply ice to reduce swelling.
  2. Contact your general dentist immediately to assess the injury and determine if x-rays or additional treatment are necessary.
  3. If orthodontic appliances are affected, schedule an appointment with us after seeing your dentist. We will adjust or replace any displaced brackets, wires, or other appliances as needed.

After-Hours Emergencies

If you experience severe pain or discomfort after office hours, please contact our office. Instructions will be available to direct you to the appropriate care provider.

For any orthodontic concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are committed to making your treatment as smooth and comfortable as possible.
